Feburary 5,2009

The Violence in Darfur is Escalating. There have been Air Strikes by the Sudanese Air Force.

JEM and the KAD (A Resistance Movement based in Kordofan Province) have formed an Alliance.

Ground Battles between the Government and Darfur Militants Continue.

President Obama saw fit two appoint two special envoys for the Middle East and South Asia.

But it is becoming clear: One is needed for Sudan

In recent weeks there has been several violent clashes around the Town of Muhajiriya. The Main Dafuri Rebel Movement JEM captured the town Three weeks ago. Recent Reports Indicate that the town of 30,000 Inhabitants has been recaptured by Government Forces. JEM maintains that it left peacefully.

The timing of the Fighting is very unique. An Indictment for Crimes Against Humanity against Current Sudanese President Al-Bashir is expected to be handed down any day now.

Sudan which now holds the Presidency of the Group of 77 Nations in the UN or to the Cold Warriors as the Non-Aligned Movement has been lobbying hard to have this planned indictment quashed.

It should be noted that the National Security Team of the Obama Administration favors some form of US Intervention in this Crisis. Former Special Envoy Williamson presented a list of Possible Scenarios to President Bush before He left Office. Both NSA Dr. Hadley and Secretary of State Rice reportedly nixed the idea.

So what should the US Do?

Darfur: This will be a test for the New Administration.

It has become clear that a Special Envoy is needed for Sudan. There are several factors that currently indicate this. They Include:

1.) The Recent Spike in the Violence in Darfur

2.) The Fear that the CPA (Comprehensive Peace Accord or the North-South Peace Treaty) could soon collapse. The Alliance between JEM and the KAD can be seen as hedging bets.

3.) The Upcoming Elections in Southern Sudan which could vote for Independence. At this time GOSS is actively involved with the Efforts to rein in the LRA Elements terrorizing both Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It should be duly noted that the Tanks on board the MV Faina seized last fall off the Coast of Somalia were destined for GOSS.

4.) The Impact that the Situation in Sudan has on the Peace Process in the Central African Republic and the Insurgency in Chad.

Former Envoy John Danforth who helped negotiate the CPA has called for an Envoy to be sent by the Obama Administration. Save Darfur Now! has called for one as well. And so now let me add my voice to this choir. A Special Envoy is needed for Sudan Mr. President.
