Yeterday I had the Pleasure of Attending the How It Ends Event at the Convention Center in Downtown Washington.
 
On a Personal Note that was the Largest Advocacy Event targeting Africa that your humble correspondent has ever attended. Over 1700 People showed up.
 
Kudos to a Job Well Done.
 
One of the Questions that was asked Yesterday was If we should have some form of punctuation at the End of How It Ends. For this Item I deliberatly chose an Exclamation Point.

The Event started off with a screening of a Movie Documenting the Rescue Campaign from Earlier this Spring. That had the attendees rollicking and rolling.
 
Opening Remarks were made by Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo the Current Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court. The Prosecutor revealed that the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) has abducted over 1200 Children since December 2008.
 
Following this was an Update from the US State Department. Phillip Carter III who is the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs highlighted the Current Position of the United States as it pertains to the LRA as follows:
 
The United States supports the Juba Peace Process in its current form. It also seeks to promote Justice within Northern Uganda as well. The US wants to create a cohesive strategy to deal with this issue but it feels that it cannot achieve this goal by itself.
 
Mr. Gibson also stated that Joseph Kony is the Person that ended the Peace Process and does not currently want a Peace Deal. It is felt that some NGOs are using the crisis in Northern Uganda as a fundraising tool to keep raising funds. So if the War ends so may their supply of cash.
 
The Undersecretary also called the recent LRA offensive "Sickening".

On June 22nd several groups Organized an Event to be followed by a Lobby Day to deal with the LRA in Uganda.

One thing is for certain. The LRA could be an Issue in the upcoming Elections is both Uganda and Sudan that are taking place in 2011.
 
How ever there is an Effort to have the United States become part of the effort that could finally put the LRA out to pasture for good.
 
Earlier this Spring the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act (S.1067, H.R. 2478) was introduced in Both Houses of Congress. This Act will if passed and singed into law require the President to draw up a Comprehensive Strategy that will include:
 
1.)Protect Civilians from LRA Attacks
 
2.) Disarm Rebel Leaders
 
3.) Improve Assistance to Communities Affected by this the Longest Conflict currently taking place in Africa.
 
Those who attended the Conference will urge Members of Congress to Sign a Letter to Secretary of State Clinton that calls attention to the ongoing threats against civilians and regional stability by the LRA. And devote US Diplomatic Efforts into the Apprehension of Joseph Kony.
 
Also the FY 10 Budget is an issue as well. They are promoting an increase in US support for transitional justice and the Economic Recovery of Northern Uganda.
 
Clearly there a vibrant effort regarding the Situation in Northern Uganda among the Youth in the United States. So this means we have one group of peers assisting another group.
 
Next Stop Congress?
