Recently the Online News outlet The Somaliland Times
had a Frontpage item titled " Somaliland is expected to receive Larger American Aid in the Coming Year."
If this is true it may be the first step in a Major Policy Shift by the Bush
Administration in its final days.
Is this an admission of failure?
This is a current Map of Somalia. If some people have their way the Northern Part will become an
Independent State.
The Region of Somaliland declared Independence after the
Fall of the Siad Barre Government in 1991. Shortly thereafter the UN intervened in a Humanitarian Mission that ended in Failure
in 1993 after a botched Mission led to the Deaths of 18 Members of the US Rangers.
In 2006 another attempt was made by the UN to establish a Central Government in Somalia. Ethiopian
Forces with assistance of the US Military drove the Union of Islamic Courts from Power. Currently the Mission is in a stalemate.
There are even reports that state Ethiopia is planning on withdrawing from Somalia.
While the area known as Puntland has been plagued by violence the Somaliland has been relatively
peaceful. Although it is Isolated without Official Recgonition as an Independent State the US Military and Other Countries
are seeking contacts for Investments.
There is a chance that is the rest of Somalia festers there could be a series of calls for the Independence
of Somaliland to be legitimized.
This is a situation that will be of Interest to the Next President
of the United States.
