Recently Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI)
conducted a Fact-Finding Mission to the Horn of Africa. His Trip also included a stop at the Africa Command (AFRICOM) Headquarters
in Germany.
The Horn of Africa is a Concern for the Senator.
Earlier this year The Senator chaired a Hearing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee regarding US Policy Options.
At this Time US Policy Concerns in the Horn include
Piracy off the Coast of Somalia, The Flow of Arms into the Country in Violation of a UN Arms Embargo, The Human Rights Climate
within Ethiopia and the Actions of Eritrea.
A Key US Senator is reccommending A Policy Change in the Horn of
Africa.
The Planned Withdrawal of Ethiopian Forces in Support of the
TFG is one of the Factors that has led the Senator to make this call.
Recent Reports of Young Somali Men leaving 4 American Cities and returning
to Somalia and Join a Breakaway Islamist Faction only heightens concerns in Washington.
The Islamists have threatened Kenya as well. Will the US provide support
to Kenya if they are attacked? Will the New Administration Support Planned Elections in both Somaliland and Puntland? How
will the Obama Administration react to Eritrea? Will they Force Eritrea to Withdraw from Djibouti?
The Senator is on the right track.
This region will have to be a focal point in US Strategy.
