What are the Objectives of MARFORAF?
The Answer is that it will Oversee Marine Corps Operations and Exercises
in Africa.
These Activities will include Civil Affairs and Supporting Humanitarian Missions
when Necessary.
Other Focal Points for the New Command Include Improving Peacekeeping Operations,
Supporting Counter Terrorism and to Reduce Threats from Groups that are Committed to Violent Extremism.
Its AOR ( Area of Responsibility) is the Whole of Africa Except for Egypt.
The Marines have Activiated Their Part of AFRICOM.
Currently the Largest Body of US Marines currently in Africa
are in Djibouti. They are an Intergal Part of the CJTF-HOA (Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa). This particular sub-command
happens to be at a locale of great interest.
Piracy in the Gulf of Aden seems to Grow Worse by the Day, The Fighting in
Somalia grows on and is threatening the Stability of the Transitional Government. Tensions are High along the Ethiopia-Eritrea
Border amongst other concerns.
Specific Marine Commands have supported the Trans Sahara Counter Terrorism
Partnership over the last few years and have been stationed on the African Partnership Station as well.
It is expected that Africa will be a Vital Concern for the United States
over the next few decades.
In the Past US Marines have fostered close relationships with Indigenous
Forces in Several Conflicts. Will this continue to be Policy when/if there are Marines Deployed to Africa?
