Last Week the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had an Editorial Regarding a Trip by the Pittsburgh Presbetry to Malawi.
 
There has been Very Little Coverage of Malawi in the Major Media Outlets Here in the US.
 
So what is the Status of US-Malawi Relations?

According to the US State Department Webpage the following occurs:
 
Malawi has Generally Good Relations with the Western Powers. Its Relationship with the Aparteid Era Government in South Africa was a source of friction with Neighboring States.
 
The country was the first State in Sub-Saharan Africa to receive Aid under the African Crisis Response Initative (ACRI). It currently is a participant under ACTOA (African Contingency Operations Training Assistance) as well.
 
The Peace Corps, Center for Disease Control and the Agency for International Development Have Programs underway in Malawi.

There are Two Major Areas of Concern Regarding Malawi. First of All the Country Has one of the Highest Rates of HIV/AIDS Infection in the World.
 
According to Amnesty International Police Brutality is Rampant. Impunity is a Problem and Attacks against Protestors largely go unpunished. It is believed that 180 Prisoners Died in Custody in 2004.
 
Freedom of the Press is an Issue as well as the Ruling Party gets most of the Air Time and Publicity.
 
That Being said what the Good People of Pennsylvania have been doing is indeed a noble task.
Some of the Projects that have been accomplished include repairing a School and a Church, Improving a Medical Clinic and access to over 850,000 Gallons of Clean Water.
 
So who has received the Blessings the People of Malawi or the People of Pittsburgh.

It would be nice to hear More Good News Like This.
